Parents and students

It's so important to know where you are going. Obviously, if you wanted to go from Houston to Los Angeles, you would take the time to find out which roads go there and what route you would take.   In the same way, a vision for student ministry must be consistent with God's vision for His people.   There is a passage in Malachi 4 that helps us gain some insight into what is pleasing to God.

Listen to these words: " Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse."    ( Malachi 4:5-6)

So, when I pray for the families of Champion Fellowship I think about this verse. I pray that children would turn back and have meaningful relationships with their parents and I pray for parents to love and nurture their children.    This is an essential part of the youth ministry at Champion Fellowship ... prayer that this verse would be a reality.   ( not the curse part..but the restoration of hearts part)

small group material for Aug 3

Small group guide for August 3 2011 “ Unplanned”

What are some lessons that emerge from watching this story ?

What did you notice about Abby’s college experience ?

What were some of the mistakes that she made early on ? ( How does the Bible address those issues ? )

What did you notice about the coalition for life and their approach to the situation ?

Is there anything we can do to make a difference with regard to this difficult situation ( Abortion/ pro life) ?

6. For further study: read Psalm 139 ( especially v 13-16)
a. Jeremiah 1:5
b. Psalm 51:5

15 Pro life truths we should know about *
You will know the truth and the truth will set you free." - Jesus Christ
1. Existing fetal homicide laws make a man guilty of manslaughter if he kills the baby in a mother's womb (except in the case of abortion).
2. Fetal surgery is performed on babies in the womb to save them while another child the same age is being legally destroyed.
3. Babies can sometimes survive on their own at 23 or 24 weeks, but abortion is legal beyond this limit.
4. Living on its own is not the criterion of human personhood, as we know from the use of respirators and dialysis.
5. Size is irrelevant to human personhood, as we know from the difference between a one-week-old and a six-year-old.
6. Developed reasoning powers are not the criterion of personhood, as we know from the capacities of three-month-old babies.
7. Infants in the womb are human beings scientifically by virtue of their genetic make up
.8. Ultrasound has given a stunning window on the womb that shows the unborn at eight weeks sucking his thumb, recoiling from pricking, responding to sound. All the organs are present, the brain is functioning, the heart is pumping, the liver is making blood cells, the kidneys are cleaning fluids, and there is a fingerprint. Virtually all abortions happen later than this date.
9. Justice dictates that when two legitimate rights conflict, the limitation of rights that does the least harm is the most just. Bearing a child for adoption does less harm than killing him.
10. Justice dictates that when either of two people must be inconvenienced or hurt to alleviate their united predicament, the one who bore the greater responsibility for the predicament should bear more of the inconvenience or hurt to alleviate it.
11. Justice dictates that a person may not coerce harm on another person by threatening voluntary harm on themselves.
12. The outcast and the disadvantaged and exploited are to be cared for in a special way, especially those with no voice of their own.
13. What is happening in the womb is the unique person-nurturing work of God, who alone has the right to give and take life.
14. There are countless clinics that offer life and hope to both mother and child (and father and parents), with care of every kind lovingly provided by people who will meet every need they can.
15.Jesus Christ can forgive all sins, and will give all who trusts him the help they need to do everything that life requires.

Family news July 25

Parents and students:
1. If you know someone who might be interested in receiving emails from me please let me know.

Wed July 27 We are meeting at the student center 6-8pm Matthew 5:27 ff

We will divide the guys and girls for this discussion of Jesus' teaching on adultery. Risa Starr will teach the girls and I will teach the boys. The boys are planning to watch a short ( 12 min) interview between James Dobson and Ted Bundy. Bundy was executed in 1989 for crimes he committed. In the interview he discusses his addiction to pornography and that every single person he knew on death row had this same problem. It was produced by Focus on the Family and was presented to a teen audience. It is probably on the internet somewhere if you would like to preview it. The title of the video is "Pornography: progressive, addictive, and deadly" and was part of a series called: "Life on the edge."

Sunday night July 31 Volleyball 7pm ( anyone can come from toddlers to old folks home)

Plans for Wed Aug 3

WED AUG 3 schedule Student center 6-8pm

We are planning to watch a documentary called: " UNPLANNED." This is the story of Abby Johnson who was a college student at Texas A & M a few years ago. She initiallly volunteered to help Planned parenthood and ended up being the executive director at the Bryan facility. After several years, she experienced a major turning point and came to the realization of what was actually happening at the office. This is the story of how she walked away from planned parenthood and became an advocate for the pro life movement. I would highly recommend this story to you and I hope that you will pray about attending this event as a family. ( running time is approx 1 hour)

Wed Aug 10 The student ministry is planning to participate in the the VBS end of the summer party. ( location: at the church) 6-8pm

Wed Aug 17 Enjoy a night off with your family ( no activities at the student center)

Wed Aug 24 Back to school event ( details coming soon)

study guide for July 20 anger

Study Guide for July 20 2011

Matthew 5:21-26

21 You have heard that the ancients were told, “ you shall not commit murder” and “ whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.”
22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, “you good for nothing” shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says “ you fool” shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
23 Therefore, if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 Leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.
25 Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown in prison.
26 Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.

What are the top 5 things that make you angry ?

Is anger a sin ? ( explain)

How does God’s sovereignty relate to our anger issues ?

Why is it hard to obey Romans 12:17-21 ?

5. “ What gives so much force to the impulse of anger is the overwhelming sense that the offender does not deserve forgiveness. That is, the grievance is so deep and so justifiable ( in our minds) that not only does self righteousness strengthen our indignation, but so does a legitimate sense of moral outrage. It’s the deep sense of legitimacy that gives our bitterness its unbending compulsion. We feel that a great crime would be committed if the magnitude of the evil we’ve experienced were just dropped and we let bygones by bygones. We are torn: our moral sense says this evil cannot be ignored and the word of God says we must forgive.” ( Faith in Future Grace page 265)

Do you agree with this author ? why or why not ?

6. Do you remember the last time you had to initiate a conversation where you apologized ? what happened ?

Why is Jesus concerned that apologies and reconciliation happen quickly ?

How does Ephesians 4:32 relate to this discussion ?

9. There is a cultural saying: “ time heals all wounds.” Do you agree with this ? why or why not ?

10. Have you ever been falsely accused ? How did you handle it ?

11. What is the most effective way to deal with sinful anger ? ( from your experience)

12. For further study: I John 4:19-21
